Data Analyst Resume Keywords: What 1,265 Job Descriptions Ask For
SQL is in 81% of data analyst job descriptions. See the keywords that matter in 2026, with real numbers, and where to put them in your resume.

The most important data analyst resume keywords are SQL (in 81% of job descriptions), Python (50%), Power BI (49%), Tableau (46%), and Excel (45%). Job descriptions also ask for communication (78%), dashboards (62%), and stakeholders (58%). Use the exact words of the job description that you apply to, and only for skills that you have.
- SQL is the one keyword that almost every data analyst resume needs. It is in 81% of job descriptions.
- Power BI (49%) and Tableau (46%) are almost equal. Put the one that the job description names first.
- Words that are not tools matter too. Communication is in 78% of job descriptions and stakeholders is in 58%.
- Half of the jobs with no level in the title ask for 3 or more years of experience.
- A keyword helps only if it is true for you and if it is in the job description.
We counted the words in 1,265 data analyst job descriptions. Our users pasted these job descriptions into Careerfornia from September 2025 to October 2026. This guide shows which keywords are in them, and how to use the keywords in your resume.
What are the most important data analyst resume keywords?
SQL is the most important keyword. It is in 81% of data analyst job descriptions. No other tool is in more than half of them.
Python, Power BI, Tableau, and Excel make a second group. Each one is in 45% to 50% of the job descriptions.
What this means for your resume:
- SQL goes in three places: the summary, the skills list, and one or more bullet points.
- Power BI and Tableau are almost equal. Do not guess. Read the job description and put its tool first.
- Excel is not out of date. It is in 45% of the job descriptions. Keep it in your skills list.
- Cloud tools are rare for analysts. AWS and Azure are each in less than 10%. Add them only if the job description names them.
Which keywords are not tools?
Communication is in 78% of data analyst job descriptions. That is almost as frequent as SQL. Many resumes list tools and forget these words.
You cannot write "good communication" and stop there. Show it in a bullet point:
Made reports for the sales team.
Built weekly dashboards in Power BI and presented the results to 6 stakeholders in sales and finance.
How many years of experience do data analyst jobs ask for?
The median data analyst job description asks for 2 years. We looked at the job descriptions that state a number of years.
| Job title | 0 to 1 years | 2 years | 3 to 4 years | 5 or more years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Entry", "junior" or "associate" in the title | 40% | 33% | 27% | 0% |
| No level in the title | 16% | 35% | 43% | 6% |
| "Senior" or "lead" in the title | 1% | 9% | 76% | 14% |
Two facts are important here:
- Six in ten entry-level titles ask for 2 or more years. The word "entry" in a title does not always mean "no experience". This group is small (48 job descriptions), so read it as a signal, not as an exact number.
- Half of the jobs with no level in the title ask for 3 or more years. If you have 1 to 2 years, apply anyway when you have the tools. Internships and large projects count as experience when you describe the work and the result.
Do you need a degree?
70% of data analyst job descriptions name a bachelor's degree. 27% name a master's degree. Only 1% name a PhD.
12% use the words "or equivalent experience". If you do not have the degree, those jobs are open to you. Put your experience above your education.
Where do the keywords go in your resume?
Put each important keyword in more than one section. An applicant tracking system (ATS) reads all of the text. A recruiter reads the top third of the page first.
| Section | What to put there | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | The job title and the 3 most important tools | Data analyst with 2 years of experience in SQL, Power BI, and Python |
| Skills | All tools from the job description that you know, in the same order | SQL, Power BI, Python, Excel, Snowflake |
| Experience | Each tool in a sentence, with a result | Wrote SQL queries that cut the monthly report time from 2 days to 3 hours |
| Projects | Tools that you did not use at work | Built a churn dashboard in Tableau with public data |
How many keywords are sufficient?
Match the tools that the job description names. The median job description names 4. Only 5% of data analyst job descriptions name 8 or more tools from our list of 30.
A long skills list does not help. A list of 25 tools tells the reader that you know none of them well. Put the tools of this job first, and remove the tools that this job does not use.
Which keywords can you use on an entry-level data analyst resume?
Use the keywords for the tools that you used in courses, projects and internships. A project counts when you can describe the data, the tool and the result.
| Keyword | A project that lets you use it |
|---|---|
| SQL | You wrote queries on a public data set with joins and aggregations |
| Excel | You built a model or a pivot table report and can explain the formulas |
| Tableau or Power BI | You published a dashboard and can show the link |
| Python | You cleaned a data set with pandas and made charts |
| Statistics | You ran a test or a regression and can explain the result |
Put the projects in a Projects section, with the link. For the numbers on entry-level jobs, see entry-level jobs that ask for experience.
Are data analyst and data engineer resume keywords the same?
No. The two jobs share SQL and Python, and then they go in different directions.
| Keyword | Data analyst job descriptions | Data engineer job descriptions |
|---|---|---|
| SQL | 81% | 87% |
| Python | 50% | 83% |
| Tableau | 46% | 20% |
| Power BI | 49% | 22% |
| Excel | 45% | 6% |
| Snowflake | 14% | 37% |
| Airflow | 2% | 33% |
| AWS | 8% | 47% |
If you apply to both types of job, you need two different resumes. The analyst resume starts with dashboards and stakeholders. The engineer resume starts with data pipelines and data quality. See data engineer resume keywords.
What else is in a data analyst job description?
Read the full job description before you write the resume. The median one has 384 words. Some of its words decide if the job fits you.
| What the job description includes | Share |
|---|---|
| A pay range in dollars | 14% |
| The word "remote" | 14% |
| The word "hybrid" | 12% |
| Generative AI or LLMs | 6% |
| A statement that there is no visa sponsorship | 3.5% |
Generative AI is rare in data analyst job descriptions. See AI skills on a resume for the numbers by role.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- One resume for all jobs. One job description asks for Tableau and stakeholders. The next asks for Python and A/B testing. One resume cannot match both.
- Keywords with no evidence. "SQL" in the skills list is weak. "Wrote SQL queries for 40 stores" is strong.
- Keywords that are not true. An interviewer will ask about them. Add a keyword only for work that you did.
- Tables, columns and graphics. Some ATS products read them in the wrong order. Use one column and standard headings.
How did we get these numbers?
We used the job descriptions that Careerfornia users pasted from September 2025 to October 2026. We removed duplicates. That left 9,403 different job descriptions. 1,265 of them have "data analyst", "business analyst" or a similar title.
For each keyword, we counted the job descriptions that contain it. We did not count how many times it appears.
The sample has limits. It is the jobs that our users applied to. Most are in the United States, and many are at large companies. It is not a sample of all data analyst jobs. The order of the keywords is more reliable than the exact percentages.
