Data Engineer Resume Keywords: What 713 Job Descriptions Ask For
SQL is in 87% of data engineer job descriptions and Python is in 83%. See the keywords that matter in 2026 and where to put them in your resume.

The most important data engineer resume keywords are SQL and Python. SQL is in 87% of data engineer job descriptions and Python is in 83%. ETL or ELT (64%), data modeling (60%), and data quality (50%) come next. AWS (47%) and Snowflake (37%) are the most frequent cloud and data warehouse. Use the exact words of the job description, and only for skills that you have.
- SQL (87%) and Python (83%) are in almost every data engineer job description. Put both in your summary.
- No cloud and no data warehouse is in more than half of the job descriptions. Lead with the one that the job description names.
- Data modeling (60%) and data quality (50%) are keywords too. Prove each one in a bullet point.
- The median data engineer job description names 6 tools from our list of 30. 36% name 8 or more.
- 73% of the jobs with no level in the title ask for 3 or more years of experience.
We counted the words in 713 data engineer job descriptions. Our users pasted these job descriptions into Careerfornia from September 2025 to October 2026. This guide shows which keywords are in them, and how to use the keywords in your data engineering resume.
What are the most important data engineer resume keywords?
SQL and Python are the most important keywords. SQL is in 87% of data engineer job descriptions and Python is in 83%. No other skill is in more than two thirds of them.
The next group describes the work, not a product. ETL or ELT is in 64%, data modeling is in 60%, and data quality is in 50%.
What this means for your resume:
- SQL and Python go in three places: the summary, the skills list, and one or more bullet points.
- Python is not optional for this role. It is in 50% of data analyst job descriptions and in 83% of data engineer job descriptions.
- Write "ETL" or "ELT" as the job description writes it. If the job description uses both, use both.
- Product names come second. No cloud, data warehouse, or orchestration tool is in more than half of the job descriptions.
Which cloud and which data warehouse should you put on your resume?
Lead with the cloud and the data warehouse that the job description names. No cloud and no data warehouse is in more than half of the job descriptions.
| Group | Keyword | Share of job descriptions |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud | AWS | 47% |
| Cloud | Azure | 38% |
| Cloud | GCP | 27% |
| Data warehouse | Snowflake | 37% |
| Data warehouse | Databricks | 25% |
| Data warehouse | BigQuery | 19% |
| Data warehouse | Redshift | 18% |
Some job descriptions name more than one cloud. Thus the cloud numbers add up to more than 100%.
If you know the tool in the job description
Put it first in its group in the skills list. Use it in one or more bullet points too.
If you know a different tool in the same group
Do not write a tool that you did not use. Name the tool that you know, and keep the general word in the line.
For example, the job description asks for Redshift and you used Snowflake. Write "Built the sales data warehouse in Snowflake". The words "data warehouse" are in 44% of the job descriptions, so they are a keyword too.
If you know more than one tool in a group, write all of them. Put the tool from the job description first.
Which orchestration and transformation tools matter?
Airflow, dbt, and Spark matter most. Each one is in 30% to 33% of data engineer job descriptions.
| Keyword | Share of job descriptions |
|---|---|
| Airflow | 33% |
| CI/CD | 33% |
| dbt | 32% |
| Spark | 30% |
| Kafka | 16% |
| PySpark | 12% |
How to use these keywords:
- Say what the tool did. "Airflow" in a skills list is weak. "Scheduled 40 daily jobs in Airflow" is strong.
- Spark and PySpark are two keywords. If you write Spark jobs in Python, use both words.
- CI/CD is as frequent as Airflow. If you release your pipelines with automated tests, say it.
Which keywords are not tools?
Communication (62%), data modeling (60%), data quality (50%), and stakeholders (50%) are the most frequent. Each one is in half or more of the job descriptions. Cross-functional is in 33%.
A skills list cannot prove these words. Prove each one in a bullet point.
| Keyword | Share | A bullet point that proves it |
|---|---|---|
| Communication | 62% | Wrote the runbook for the orders pipeline and presented the design to 3 teams |
| Data modeling | 60% | Designed a data model with 4 fact tables and 11 dimension tables for sales reports |
| Data quality | 50% | Added 60 data quality tests that stop a load when a key is empty or duplicated |
| Stakeholders | 50% | Agreed the definitions of 9 metrics with stakeholders in finance and product |
| Cross-functional | 33% | Worked in a cross-functional team with analysts and backend engineers to move 30 reports |
Why do data engineer job descriptions name more tools than other roles?
A pipeline has many layers, and a data engineer job description names a tool for each layer. The median data engineer job description names 6 tools from our list of 30. 36% name 8 or more.
The reason is our reading of the data. We did not ask the companies. The job descriptions are also long: the median is 492 words, the longest of our role groups.
These layers come after the language, the cloud, the data warehouse, and the orchestration tool:
| Layer | Keywords |
|---|---|
| Reporting | Power BI 22%, Tableau 20% |
| Second language | Java 17% |
| Infrastructure | Terraform 12%, Kubernetes 12%, Docker 10% |
| Other databases | NoSQL 10% |
What to do about a long tool list
- Mark each tool in the job description.
- Sort the tools into three groups: used at work, used in a project, and not used.
- Put the first group in the skills list and in the bullet points, in the order of the job description.
- Put the second group in the projects section.
- Leave out the third group.
Group your skills list by layer. Then a reader finds each tool quickly.
Our count cannot show which tools a company requires. Read the job description for the words "required" and "preferred".
How many years of experience do data engineer jobs ask for?
The median is 3 years for data engineer jobs with no level in the title. We looked at the job descriptions that state a number of years.
| Job title | 0 to 1 years | 2 years | 3 to 4 years | 5 to 7 years | 8 or more years | Median |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "Entry", "junior" or "associate" in the title (28 job descriptions) | 25% | 54% | 21% | 0% | 0% | 2 |
| No level in the title (388) | 5% | 22% | 55% | 14% | 3% | 3 |
| "Senior", "staff" or "lead" in the title (145) | 0% | 5% | 41% | 40% | 14% | 5 |
Data engineering is hard to enter. 73% of the jobs with no level in the title ask for 3 or more years. That is the highest share of our four role groups.
The shares in the table are rounded, so a row does not always add up to exactly 100%.
What this means for an entry-level data engineer resume
- 75% of the entry-level titles ask for 2 or more years. This group is small (28 job descriptions), so read it as a signal.
- Look at jobs with no level in the title too. 22% of them ask for 2 years.
- Describe internships and projects as work. Name the pipeline, the tools, and the result.
See our guide to entry-level jobs that ask for experience.
Do you need a degree for a data engineer job?
52% of data engineer job descriptions name a bachelor's degree. 24% name a master's degree.
14% use the words "or equivalent experience". If you do not have the degree, those jobs are open to you. Put your experience above your education.
Should you put generative AI on a data engineer resume?
Put it on your resume only when the job description names it and you did the work. Generative AI or LLMs are in 12% of data engineer job descriptions.
The share goes up. It was 8% from July to December 2025 and 18% from January to June 2026.
If you built a pipeline that supplies data to an LLM product, describe that pipeline. See our guide to AI skills on a resume.
Where do the keywords go in your resume?
Put each important keyword in more than one section: the summary, the skills list, and the experience. An applicant tracking system (ATS) reads all of the text. Put the most important keywords near the top of the page.
| Section | What to put there | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | The job title and the 3 or 4 most important keywords | Data engineer with 4 years of experience in SQL, Python, AWS, and Snowflake |
| Skills | The tools from the job description that you know, in groups | Languages: SQL, Python. Cloud: AWS. Data warehouse: Snowflake. Orchestration: Airflow, dbt |
| Experience | Each tool in a sentence, with a result | Moved 35 ETL jobs to Airflow and cut failed runs from 9 each week to 1 |
| Projects | Tools that you did not use at work | Built a streaming pipeline with Kafka and Spark on public transit data |
How do you write a data pipeline bullet point?
Name the type of pipeline, the tools, the data volume, and the result in one line. A line with no tools and no numbers has no keywords.
Built data pipelines for the analytics team.
Built 12 ELT pipelines in Python and Airflow that load 40 million rows each day into Snowflake.
Use this order:
- A verb: built, moved, designed, automated.
- The thing that you built: an ELT pipeline, a data model, a data quality test.
- The tools, with the spelling of the job description.
- A number: rows, tables, jobs, hours, or cost.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- One resume for all jobs. One job description asks for AWS, Redshift, and Airflow. The next asks for Azure, Databricks, and Spark. One resume cannot lead with both.
- A skills list with every tool. The median job description names 6 tools. A list of 30 tools does not show which ones you know well.
- Tools with no evidence. "dbt" in the skills list is weak. "Wrote 80 dbt models for finance data" is strong.
- Keywords that are not true. An interviewer can ask about each word on your resume. Add a keyword only for work that you did.
- Tables, columns, and graphics in the layout. Use one column and standard headings.
How did we get these numbers?
We used the job descriptions that Careerfornia users pasted from September 2025 to October 2026. We removed duplicates. That left 9,403 different job descriptions. 713 of them have "data engineer" or a similar title.
For each keyword, we counted the job descriptions that contain it. We did not count how many times it appears. For the number of tools, we used one list of 30 common tools for all roles.
The sample has limits. It is the jobs that our users applied to. Most are data and software jobs in the United States, and many are at large companies. It is not a sample of all data engineer jobs. The order of the keywords is more reliable than the exact percentages.
