ChatGPT Resume Prompts: 9 Prompts to Tailor Your Resume to a Job
Copy 9 ChatGPT resume prompts that tailor your resume to a job description. Each prompt has a check and a rule that stops invented facts.

The best ChatGPT resume prompts do one task each. Give ChatGPT your full resume, the full job description, and a list of facts that it must not change. Then ask it to extract the keywords, compare them with your resume, and rewrite the summary, skills and bullet points. Check each answer against your original resume.
- Give the chat tool your full resume as text, the full job description, and a list of locked facts.
- Use one prompt for one task. Nine short prompts are easier to check than one long prompt.
- Put one rule in each prompt. The rule: do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
- A chat tool can add skills or numbers that are not true. Compare the new resume with the original before you send it.
- The median job description in our data has 411 words and names 4 to 6 tools.
A general AI chat tool can tailor a resume to a job description. This guide gives you 9 prompts to copy. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other chat tools.
Can you use ChatGPT to tailor a resume?
Yes. ChatGPT can tailor a resume when you give it your resume, the job description, and clear rules. To tailor a resume is to rewrite it with the words of one job description.
- It does this well: it finds the keywords, compares them with your resume, and rewrites text.
- You must check this: each skill, each number and each date in its answer.
What do you need before you start?
You need three things: your full resume as text, the full job description, and a list of locked facts.
- Your full resume as text. Copy the text from your file. Remove your phone number and home address.
- The full job description. Copy all of it.
- Locked facts. Your employers, job titles, dates, degrees and numbers. The tool must not change them.
What are the best ChatGPT prompts to tailor a resume?
The best prompts do one task each and tell the tool to keep every fact. Replace the text in square brackets with your own text.
Send prompt 7 first in each new chat. Prompts 3 to 6 use the resume and the job description that are in the chat.
Prompt 1: Extract the keywords
Purpose: list the keywords and the required tools.
Read the job description below.
Make a table: Keyword, Type, Required or preferred.
Type is one of: tool, skill, task, degree, years of experience.
List every tool, language and platform. Use the exact spelling.
Do not add a keyword that is not in the text.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Job description:
[PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION]
Check this after: search the job description for 3 keywords from the table.
Prompt 2: Find the missing keywords
Purpose: find the keywords that your resume does not have.
Compare my resume with the job description.
Put each keyword in one of three groups:
1. I have it: the word is in my resume. Quote the line.
2. Similar: my resume has a similar tool or task. Name both and quote the line.
3. Do not have: no line in my resume supports it.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
My resume:
[PASTE RESUME]
Job description:
[PASTE JOB DESCRIPTION]
Check this after: keep a "Similar" word only if you can explain it.
Prompt 3: Rewrite the summary
Purpose: get a summary of 2 sentences for this job.
Rewrite my summary for this job in 2 sentences. Maximum 45 words.
Sentence 1: the job title, my years of experience, and 3 tools from the "I have it" group.
Sentence 2: my main task and who I did it for.
Count the years from the dates in my resume. If the job title does not fit my work, ask me.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Check this after: the job title and the years of experience are true.
Prompt 4: Reorder and trim the skills list
Purpose: put the skills of this job first.
Reorder and trim my skills list for this job.
Put the skills that the job description names first, in its order and with its spelling.
Keep a maximum of 15 skills. Remove the skills that this job does not use.
Then write two lines: "Removed:" and "Added:". The "Added:" line must be empty.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Check this after: the "Added" line is empty.
Prompt 5: Rewrite the bullet points
Purpose: get action, tool and result in each bullet point.
Rewrite the bullet points of my job at [EMPLOYER] for this job.
Each one has an action verb, a tool and a result. Maximum 25 words.
Keep every fact: the same tools, numbers and team sizes.
If a tool or a result is missing, do not invent it. Write [ADD FACT] and ask me.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Show a table: Original, New, What changed.
Check this after: each number in the "New" column is in the "Original" column.
Prompt 6: Rewrite one project
Purpose: show the parts of one project that fit this job.
Rewrite my project [PROJECT NAME] for this job.
Give me a title, one line with the tools, and 3 bullet points.
Put first the parts that the job description asks for.
Use only the tools, data and results that my resume gives for this project. Do not make the project larger than it is.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Check this after: each tool in the new text is in your original project.
Prompt 7: The "do not invent" guard
Purpose: give the tool strict rules before it writes.
Rules for all of your answers in this chat:
1. Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
2. Do not change these locked facts: [LIST EMPLOYERS, JOB TITLES, DATES, DEGREES, NUMBERS].
3. If a fact in your answer is different from my resume, mark it with [CHANGED].
4. If you need a fact that is not in my resume, ask me. Do not guess.
Now wait for my next prompt.
My resume:
[PASTE RESUME]
Check this after: search each answer for [CHANGED].
Prompt 8: Clean up the format
Purpose: get plain text that an applicant tracking system (ATS) can read.
Put this resume into a plain format. Change the format only, not the words.
- One column. No tables, text boxes, icons or images.
- Standard headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education.
- Each job: job title, employer, city, dates.
- Plain text. Each bullet point starts with a hyphen.
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Resume:
[PASTE NEW RESUME]
Check this after: no line is missing.
Prompt 9: The final check
Purpose: list every claim that is not in the original resume.
Compare these two resumes line by line.
List every claim in the new resume that is not in the original resume.
A claim is a skill, tool, employer, job title, date, degree, number or result.
Show a table: Claim, Line in the new resume, Status (new, changed, or stronger wording).
Do not add any skill, tool, employer, date or number that is not in my resume.
Original resume:
[PASTE ORIGINAL RESUME]
New resume:
[PASTE NEW RESUME]
Check this after: run it in a new chat. Then read the new resume yourself.
What goes wrong when you use a chat tool for resumes?
A chat tool can add facts that are not true, and it can lose your format.
| What can go wrong | What to do |
|---|---|
| It adds a skill, a tool or a number | Run prompt 9 and correct each new claim |
| It loses the format | Put the text into your own one-column file |
| It gives a different answer each time | Choose one version and keep it |
| A new chat starts without your resume | Send prompt 7 again |
| A long chat drifts from the rules | Start a new chat for each job |
Can employers tell if you used ChatGPT?
Not for certain. We do not know of a public test that reliably shows that a chat tool wrote a resume. One 2023 study found that GPT detectors consistently marked writing by non-native English writers as AI-generated.
A reader notices generic wording and claims that you cannot explain.
Results-driven professional who spearheaded cross-functional initiatives.
Built weekly sales dashboards in Power BI for 6 stakeholders in sales and finance.
- Keep your own facts and numbers.
- Read the resume aloud.
- Remove words that you would not say, such as "spearheaded".
Is it OK to use AI to write a resume?
Yes, if each line is true. AI is a writing tool, and you are responsible for each line.
The tool does not know what you did, so the facts must come from you. An interviewer can ask you about each line. If a job post has a rule about AI, follow it.
Chat tool or a resume tool: which is faster?

See the keyword guides for data analyst, software engineer and data engineer jobs.
How do you use ChatGPT to tailor a resume in 10 minutes?
Send the rules first, then the keyword prompts, then the rewrite prompts. Check at the end. The times are a plan, not a measurement.
- Minute 1. Send prompt 7 in a new chat.
- Minutes 2 to 4. Send prompts 1 and 2.
- Minutes 5 and 6. Send prompts 3 and 4.
- Minutes 7 and 8. Send prompt 5 for your 2 most recent jobs, and prompt 6 for one project.
- Minute 9. Put the new text into your resume file. Use prompt 8 if the format is not clean.
- Minute 10. Send prompt 9 in a new chat. Correct each new claim.
How did we get our numbers?
Careerfornia users pasted these job descriptions from September 2025 to October 2026. We removed duplicates. That left 9,403 different job descriptions.
For the tools, we counted the names from a list of 30 common tools. The sample is mostly US data and software jobs. It is not a sample of all jobs.
We did not measure how often a chat tool invents a fact. This guide gives you checks, not statistics.
